Make sure the camcorder's steady and the scene's well lit. Plan what you're going to shoot - don't just shoot and hope. Be very critical when you're editing - if it's not right, do it again, shoot it again if you have to. With painful experience you'll learn that it's a good idea to shoot it again anyway so that you can pick the best footage when you're editing.

I agree with Iridflare... and here is some additional detail:

1) NEVER use the camcorder handheld. ALWAYS use a tripod, monopod, table surface or some other steadying device or method.

2) Don't pan (left/right; up/down). If you have to pan, do it s l o w l y.

3) Don't zoom (in/out). If you have to zoom, do it s l o w l y.

4) Don't expect a low-end consumer camcorder to do well in poor lighting conditions. You control the lights - turn them on. Consumer cams behave a LOT better under good lighting conditions.

5) Video is only part of the "system". Audio plays a big role, too. Add a soundtrack when you edit the video.

6) For Music videos, do the cuts on the beat of the music.

7) Use crossfades and cuts for transitions when you edit... nothing else.

8) Capture WAY more video than you need. Better to have more than you need rather than not enough and need it.

9) PLAN what you want to capture to video. Do a storyboard and make a shotlist. The more you plan - and stick to the plan, the easier it will be. Then use the storyboard during editing to guide your editing requirements.

10) Watch TV for technical examples... Fast, upbeat, music generally has clips less than 2 seconds long between cuts. For a 3.5 minute song, that is a LOT of cuts. Slower music uses crossfades.
