Best cheap digital camera flash brand?I'm looking to buy a flash for my EOS digital canon rebel XT without spending a lot of money. I've found a few different brands that are cheaper : Sunpak, Bower, Phoenix, and vivitar? which os the best flash for price???

Be careful.

The new DSLR's cameras use very low trigger voltages (Canon 6v and Nikon 12v) This has a lot to do with all the communication that is going on between the flash units and the cameras. Many of the older flash units use trigger voltages of over 300v.

If you buy a flash unit that uses a higher trigger voltage you will fry the electronics in your camera and void the warranty.

You will be better off saving your pennies and buying one of the Canon dedicated flash units for your XT.

Since your camera has E-TTL II flash circuitry you want a compatible flash.

What is "E-TTL"? It allows the camera to control a compatible flash by measuring the light from the flash directly off the sensor and shutting the flash off when sufficient light for ccorrect exposure has reached the sensor. Used correctly, you can almost guarantee 100% correct flash exposures.

IMO you should buy the top of the line flash that Canon offers for your camera. It may appear to have more features than you need but - in all my years of experience, I've found its better to have a feature and not need it than to need it and not have it.

You should also buy an off-camera flash bracket and any necessary cables to connect flash and camera since they have to "communicate" to work correctly. A good flash bracket gives you more versatility and it looks much cooler than an on-camera flash.

Plan on spending some quality time with the Owner's Manuals for your flash and camera. The section on "Using Flash" in the camera manual is especially important.

Historical footnote: TTL was introduced to the world in 1981 by Minolta when they released the X-700 and the "PX" series of flash units designed for it.
