Well since you already own a Canon, I'd recommend getting a Canon SLR Camera. Why? Because it's best in market, and you already know some of the interface since you already owned a Canon camera. Also Nikon is quite nice, but not as good as Canon, oh and Olympus. Stick with those three brands.

In my opinion a fairly simple yet very precise DSLR is the Nikon D3000. It is a fairly new camera, it has multiple help features to help show you how to adjust all the settings. For a good starter DSLR the nikon d3000 is a great camera, i am currently shooting with one myself being my other is being serviced. If you are curios about the quality of photos it takes feel free to contact me and i can email some of the photos ive personally taken with the d3000

You and I are in the same boat..I have been using a Canon point and shoot for the last three years and am now thinking of upgrading to a DSLR. Of course it has to be Canon for me as I'm used to the interface now. I am definitely going to buy the latest rebel t2i as it's the most feature-packed of all Canon's entry-level DSLRs.
