Best Non Professional Digital Camera?

These are useful and collceted by ying!

Best Non Professional Digital Camera?I need to take graduation pictures and the university will use a major professional arena to hold the event indoors so I am thinking of zoom digital camera as we may be stuck too far away from the dais.

Then my family will be off to Europe in the summer so I figure it will be a combination of scenery shots and close up family shots.

I need a digital camera for family use that can cover these situations.

I like the idea that more mega-pixel capacity may give better quality picture.

I am concerned that most zoom ranges may not be enough for the graduation or scenery shots.

I lean towards Nikon as they have a reputation for the best in lenses. Here are the choices.

1. Nikon Cool-pix S8000 14.2mp Digital Camera with 10x Zoom $ 300 USA. It will be available sometime in March 2010.

2. Nikon Cool-pix P100 10 MP Digital Camera with 26x Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom $ 400 USA

3. Nikon's Cool-pix L110 Digital Camera 12.1m mega pixel 15x optical zoom $ 280 USA

My wife will use this in Europe so a more point & shoot and ease of use issue is important.

What do you recommend?

Thanks.
Thanks for all the feedback!

If I stretch the budget perhaps the Nikon D3000 for $ 457?

If I keep to the budget what do you think about the Nikon Coolpix P90 at $ 343?

In AP Photo we use a variety of cameras (you can click on the sources to see each camera's features):
Canon A590 IS
Kodak EasyShare Z915
Canon SX120 IS
Canon PowerShot SX10 IS
Canon PowerShot G10

Assuming you are not into interchangeable lens cameras. I would recommend the Canon Powershot SX20 IS. This camera has up to a 600mm lens for those distance shots. And a adjustable LCD so you could hold the camera over your head and still see what the lens sees.
So after my first and last experience with Nikon Cool-pix, I am not a fan.

P.S. another reviewer listed the Canon SX10 IS, this is the same as the Canon SX20 IS, However the SX10 IS is now dicontinued

I'd go with the P100. I have the P90, and it's a great little camera. The zoom is something like 624mm compared to a 35mm. And the zoom works great. I've shot photos of the moon and airplanes with it. Check out amazon.com to see photos I and other people have taken with this camera. Just type in Nikon Coolpix P90 and you'll see a place to click on to view other users photos.
