What's the most important thing to look for when choosing a Digital SLR camera?

Other people asked questions on various topics, and are still
waiting for answer. Would be great if you can take a sec and
answer them

What's the most important thing to look for when choosing a Digital SLR camera? Is it the camera make, the lens, the number of modes? What's your view please?

The most important thing to Look at is the Specifications. right? compare a 12.1 megapixel D60 to a 15.1megapixel Canon Eos Rebel T1i.right???

The megapixels and the color.

No, it's 100,000 things all together but the biggest determiner is price. Most people simply don't have $ 3000 to blow on the best stuff and you don't need it.

I look at what people have done with it (in Flickr camera finder). Different cameras, from Sayno point and shoots to Rolliflex have a personality. People don't want to hear this but as far as technical aspects go, cameras in their respective classes are pretty much the same. However I'll put $ 10 that alot of people can tell the difference between a picture taken with a Canon, Nikon or Olympus. People are also afraid of this, the camera takes the picture. If you know where to point it, it will be a good picture. Even back to film, the math is set to work the chemicals. You can't express your talent by completely underexposing into black.

The most important thing to look for is if it works for you. If megapixels and color makes you feel all silly on the inside then go for it. Unless you have $ 8000 to spend for 1000000ISO, most cameras you're going to look at are pretty much the same.

Now to counter act the thumbs down I'll be getting.... bauck! Canon and Nikon Canon and Nikon, Bauck, whoot whoot whoot whoot, nuk nuk nuk, chowda' head.

If you are buying your first SLR, I'd generally recommend the D40 over a more advanced model. While I'm always in favour of buying good quality (it saves money over the long run), it makes sense to go for the D40 to start off with, and then upgrade only once you start hitting its limitations (which, for many people, will be never). It won't be a wasted expense if you later decide to upgrade because there are places where it doesn't make much sense to carry a D3 because of the risk it might be stolen or damaged.

You will need to budget for lenses. It's much better to buy a less expensive camera and spend your budget on buying better quality lenses, than buy an expensive camera and cheapskate by buying non-Nikon or non-Canon lenses. The choice of lenses will have an effect on the quality of your images that you will be able to see.
