Digital camera for a 5-1/2 y.o. -- recommendations?

Do you find what you need? Look here!

Digital camera for a 5-1/2 y.o. -- recommendations?I was hoping to get a digital camera for my son for Xmas. I figured there'd be a decent one designed for kids (durable, easy controls), but, judging from the Amazon reviews, the picture quality really stinks.

My son takes beautiful, well-composed pix with my camera, and he really enjoys it. I'd like to get him his own... Any suggestions?

None of the ones built for kids will take great photos. They're lots of fun, though, and you can clean them up on the computer.

Other options:

Waterproof cameras tend to be pretty sturdy

Camera prices are coming down. I've seen 5 or 6 megapixel stripped down HPs in blister packs for $ 40. You could get him one if you're not worried about the small parts.

How about photography lessons instead?

Congratulations on having a son who is patient and focused enough for photography.

Really cheap cameras don't seem to take good pictures at all. This one that has been recommended very highly for a relatively inexpensive camera---

It has Image Stabilization which will help him take clear pictures It also has a viewfinder which usually isn't found on a cheaper camera, or even the more expensive ones. And he can grow with this camera, choosing to manually set the shutter and aperture as he learns more about the camera.

It is a good little camera for a child and also for an adult.

I just bought a camera for my 5 and 6 year old step-kiddos. A local camera shop was selling refurbished older models at very great prices, so I picked up a Nikon Coolpix L2 for $ 50. It's got 6 megapixels, which is plenty (probably more than we need). I wouldn't say the controls are straight forward, but I figure if I teach them how to press the shutter button and how to press the review button, they'll be fine.

The one thing that has been suggested to me, and which I wasn't able to find at a low enough price, is to get cameras which don't have lenses that zoom out much, because that's the part the is most likely to be damaged. There are some that have a zoom without the lens physically moving forward (perhaps it's just digital zoom), so there's less risk of it getting bumped and jostled.

You should check out your local camera store for refurbished older models.
