What is a good dSLR camera for someone beginning photography?I have always just used basic P&S digital cameras, but would like to learn more about photography. I don't know very much as I am just starting to think about getting a good camera and have just started doing some research. I've looked at the Canon Rebel T1i and the Nikon D5000 and also a friend told me about the Canon EOS 40D. Any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.

The Nikon D5000 is good; the D90 is better (if you can afford it). I wouldn't bother with Canon.

My first was a Nikon D40. Excellent starter camera. All my DSLRs have been Nikon. I prefer the ergonomics & looks...probably not much diff in image quality. Anyway, it's not the camera that makes the image...

The T1i and D5000 cameras are entry level dSLR's. Take a look at the Nikon D3100. It has more bang for the buck when you compare the features of the three.
The D3100 can shoot Full HD video (1080p) and is the only entry level camera that can shoot video and use the auto-focus feature
