A shady situation at work please help?A few weeks ago a digital camera from our department vanished and no one could find it. Our department, which consist of 5 people checked around and we couldn't find it so the company went out and spent $ 1500 on a new digital camera.

One of my coworkers "Jim" was cleaning some junk from around his desk when he found the missing camera behind some paper sitting behind his computer monitor. My boss "Steve" was furious and threaten to fired him and proceeded to write him up when Jim gave his two weeks notice out of nowhere.

People are spectulating that Jim tried to steal the camera and got cold feet. I found out that Steve checked around our cubicles when the camera first vanished and the camera wasn't there and now its pops up when Jim is cleaning and right before is he is about to get in trouble he give his two weeks notice!

I think it was gross incompetence on Jim parts for not searching hard enough for the camera but the circumstances which it was found seems fishy.

Shady?

Why are people so suspicious of Jim? Has he earned a reputation prior to this incident of not being trustworthy? At many companies, misplacing a camera wouldn't be grounds for firing someone, so obviously Jim has done other things that have jeopardized trust. So I think there are larger things going on here than a misplaced camera - it's Jim's general reputation that needs to be questioned.

didn't you guys all have a pre-employment background check?

Guess it depends on if you want Jim to be guilty or not. It's very possible he didn't check well enough, and when he realized he was going to be wrongly accused, and have his job threatened over something he potentially didn't do, then he may have been so indignant about the situation that he didn't want to be part of a company that would operate like that anymore. Also, let's keep in mind it's very brazen that for a boss to claim something like that with no proof, especially to threaten a job, jump to conclusions and let other co-workers know about the situation. Heck, Jim could be guilty OR Jim could have a harassment suit on his hands. . .either one.
