looking into a digital camera for photography?As her christmas present, I wanted to get her a good digital camera since her new hobby is photography, and since I know nothing about cameras I need a little help. I'm trying for a price range under 300$
Any ideas on brands I should consider or even actual models of a certain type?

If you think she's advanced enough to stick with photography as a hobby and possibly a vocation or even an avocation, I'd recommend the 8MP Panasonic DMC-FZ18, or it's successor, the 10MP DMC-FZ28. Both of the cameras (I have both of them), have a perfect 18x OPTICAL (not digital!!!) zoom Leica lens, with a very wide 28 and 27mm (respectively)zoom at the wide end, and a flash powerful enough to definitely illuminate a mid-to-large size room. Both are cameras that you can leave in a totally automatic mode, or you can go into what Panasonic calls "Intlligent Auto" mode, which does everything for you, to any number of scene modes in between, which should suit many different photography situations.
