Then start remember it's not the camerea who makes the photographer it's the person.

Digital camera's work GREAT. they are more and more involved too.
i would study basic composition and learn basic rules of photography.
and play with the manual setting you have on your current camera!
then when you do get one of the costly bodies and lens you won't be like way overwhelmed.

You dont need a fancy camera to be a photographer. If you are a true photographer you can take an amazing picture with any kind of camera even a disposable one. You can start that "REAL" photography with that digital camera you already have.
