I happen to like the Nikon D50, which is only available used and still holds its price well.

The Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XTi are both fantastic choices, but Canon is probably outside your price range.

Thus, the Nikon D40 with an 18-55mm lens (about $ 495 from Calumet) and the Pentax K100D (about $ 470 from buydig.com) are best options for under $ 600. Once you factor in a memory card you're at $ 500. Throw in a bag or some other accessory and you're at the $ 600 limit.

Even a name brand external flash is $ 300 or more, so that accessory won't work. However, portable printers are often on sale; I recently picked up a Canon dye sub printer for $ 49.

You may be able to find a good used Nikon D40 on craigslist that includes a lens.

The Nikon D40 will use all the Nikon AF lenses made from 1992, so you will have a wonderful choice of new and used lenses.

Sony bought the Konica-Minolta camera company and their DSLR body will use some of the older Konica-Minolta lenses but there certainly will not be the abundance of lenses for the Sony camera as there are of Nikon's
