Beginners Digital Photography Camera? My fiance is interested in photography so I would like to get him a camera for christmas. I don't want to spend too much but I want to get him something he can do alot with. I'm looking for a beginners professional camera. Something more than the typical digital camera most have something with bells and whistles for the beginner photographer but without spending too much! Can anyone give me some ideas and advice?

Wow, can you come up with more contradicting needs? Beginners professional and "bells and whistles" without spending too much.
Anything that is considered "professional" is going to cost you at a bare minimum $ 1000. And then add the cost of lenses. If you want a reasonable camera with a very reasonable price, look in the range of the Canon S5 IS and the equivalent cameras by other manufacturers. I'm not trying to push Canon or any other brand, it's just what I'm familiar with. This level camera is affordable and has the abilities to be used in manual and more creative ways. If that's not enough of a camera, look at the Canon Rebel XTi or XSi and the similar cameras by other brands. They are capable of semi- (or beginners) professional images but will cost around double what the S5 or equivalent but many more bells and whistles and the ability to change lenses for more flexibility.

Well you will want a good DSLR. There are really 4 major brands to look at.

Olympus, Canon, Nikon, and Sony. (There are others but these are kind of the core. You can find some entry level versions or pro versions. Really unless he is really ready to commit 100% to becoming pro full time then an entry level camera will work just fine for him. They start in the area of $ 680 on up to $ 1,000 for the entry level kits. If you shop around you may find a good deal with a bonus lens.

Some camera's to look at:
Olympus E-520 or E-510
Nikon D-60 or D-80
Canon Rebel XT or XTI
Sony A350

You will want to spend some time picking out the brand. Once you pick a camera you will probably start buying extra lenses and equipment for your camera. Check to see what lenses are available and their cost and quality. Once you invest in these things if you do decide to upgrade later you tend to keep the lenses etc.

Really all 4 brands are excellent and it is really just personal preference. I chose Olympus because I liked the way it felt in my hand. The features are all similar some are better in 1 area less so in another but they tend to wash each other out. Look for something comfortable at a reasonable price and I am sure he will be happy.
