obviously the moon would be suitable, but is there anything else that it would be good to aim it at. the camera has a 15s, 30s and a 60s shutter speed and i will be using a standard, but fairly stable tripod.

No. By having a nearly fully automatic camera, you are actually limiting yourself. You would be vastly better off getting a regular DSLR, with removable lenses. Canon's are among the best, since they have low electronic noise that shows up in pictures.

Besides the moon, that's about it. You would not even be able to take wide-field shots of the night sky. That would require that your camera's shutter speed be set to "Bulb" which this camera doesn't seem to have that option. The slowest speed is 1/15.

This camera is not really the type suited to astrophotography. Even if you had a good, steady tripod you would need an EQ mount to maintain tracking or else you'll end up with stars trails instead of the stars being sharply focused points of light. But again, that is moot b/c you can't set the shutter speed to "Bulb" (Bulb means you control how long the shutter stays open to allow in as much light as you want). Your other major limitation with this camera is that the lens cannot be removed to attach it directly to a telescope.

Save your money and get a regular DSLR if astrophotography is what you really want to do.

try some wide angle shots of the sky at 30 and 60 seconds
