Looking for educated opinons to help with my Canon digital camera decision. Help?I have an old canon rebel 35mm that is about 10 years old. While I still plan on holding onto that and using it (the classics never die!!), I would like to get a digital. My main uses for it would be family photos, pets, outdoor scenes and maybe some short movies of my daughter playing/special occasions/etc.
I speak very little digital speak, so I'll admit that right off the bat! :) I have read reviews and done some research and I think I've narrowed it down to a few models. I would appreciate some experienced people to weigh in on this and make their reccomendations/suggest another camera if you feel it would be more appropriate.
In the running are: A650 IS, SX100 IS, A720 IS, S5 IS, A590 IS. I found *NO* negative reviews on the 650 and of course since the 590 was just released, there aren't any reviews on it yet.
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
The suggestion to add my rebel lenses to a new digital rebel is an option I have not considered! Thank you! :)
As far as size/weight, that is not an issue with me. I'm not necessarily looking for the "pocketable" type cameras. Photo quality is a bigger selling point then the size issue to me!

Since you already have lens(es) for your Rebel 35mm just buy a Rebel XTi and use the same lenses ... the camera's you listed are point and shoot and have MUCH smaller sensors.
The good thing about getting a DSLR is that nearly all the skills you have been using with your 35mm Rebel can be used on the Rebel XTi

if you are looking for a compact, don't get the S5 IS. Although it's a great camera, it's a bit bulky. If you are looking for a point and shoot, you should compare all of them on dpreview in a side by side comparison and choose the one with features that you like, and the one that feels the best. You won't be disappointed with any of those cameras

Having shot a 35mm SLR Rebel, you will not be satisfied going to a point & shoot with the small sensor and slow reaction time.
Instead of spending money for the EOS Rebel XTi, I would recommend checking into purchasing a used Rebel XT with an 8 MP APS-C sensor and great reaction time. Plus you get to take advantage to the lenses that you already own. If you have a good relationship with a local camera shop, then talk to them about what pre-owned EOS DSLR would be best for you.
Good Luck with your hobby!
